. .:: This is the story of a particularly fun couple... a man who loves to surprise his wife in creative ways, and a woman who is bemused by him! On this occasion, mom had her sights set on my work, and so desired to have me photograph the birth of their little one. Dad told her that unfortunately, it wasn't financially feasible. Then he gave me a ring, immediately booked me, and coaxed me into the big secret. I asked him, "So, when exactly are you planning on telling her?"
He replied, "I'm not. You're just going to walk into the delivery room and capture the look on her face!"
Hesitant, yet amused, I said, "You know, laboring women don't always... appreciate... surprises. Even in day-to-day life, women like to know when there'll be a photographer present..."
"Oh, no, she's cool. She'll love it!"
And so, though I thought it was a horrible, awful, terrible, stupid, and risky idea, I played along.
I said, "You know, if she calls me, I can't lie to her. Though, technically if she asks me if I still have availability, I can truthfully say that I don't.... because you booked me." When I received the call that she was in labor, I headed to the hospital waiting area, where dad met me and brought me into the room.
He said, "Babe, look who I found in the hallway!"
She said excitedly, "Oh, hi Michelle," assuming I was at the hospital to photograph the birth of another baby.
So I said, "Do you think it would be alright if I stayed and photographed Sawyer's birth story?" And suddenly the room was filled with tears and smiles! You'll see in the images the vast amount of work that Dad, family, and friends dedicated to making this a truly special day! ::. .
